A Study on the Characteristics of Flowering in Hibiscus Syriacus L.

Yeam Do-Yi
Abstract
To investigate the possibility of year-round flowering in Hibiscus syriacus L., this study was carried out to clarify the favorable condition for growth and flower-bud formation under the field and growth chamber.
The growth of Hibiscus syriacus L. was more affected by photoperiod than temperature, it was maintained continuously in long day, high temperature but ceased in short day, high temperature. The lower the temperature, the more insensible the photoperiodic response.
In the cuttings treated with the different photoperiod and temperature in the previous season, no difference was found in rooting percent but the vigorous shoot growth with short day.
With the maintenance of long day and high temperature after full bloom, flowering and flowerbud formation went on normally although it was stopped for a little while, but new shoot growth was drastically decreased. On the other hand, flowering on old twig with the flowering-bud formation stopped was observed with this treatment, and this was remarkable on Asadal of a single flower.
